Guidance for Your Category

A normal BMI is associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health conditions.

  • Maintain regular physical activity (150+ min/week)
  • Focus on balanced nutrition with whole foods
  • Monitor weight periodically to stay in range
  • Prioritize sleep and stress management for metabolic health

Important: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or fat distribution. Athletes may have a high BMI with low body fat. Always consult a healthcare provider for a complete health assessment.

What is a BMI Calculator?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's height and weight. It is used as a screening tool to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)².

BMI is widely used by healthcare providers because it is quick, inexpensive, and correlates reasonably well with body fat levels at the population level. However, it has significant limitations — it does not distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass, and it can misclassify muscular athletes as overweight.

The CDC defines BMI categories as: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), and Obese (30 and above). These thresholds are the same for all adults but differ for children and teenagers.
