How This Is Calculated

This calculator uses the Income Shares model, which is the basis for child support guidelines in 40+ US states. It assumes that children should receive the same proportion of parental income they would have received if the parents lived together.

The basic obligation is determined by combined income and number of children, then split proportionally by each parent's income share. Work-related childcare and health insurance costs are added. If the paying parent has significant custody time (over 20%), a shared parenting credit reduces the obligation.
