What is a BMR Calculator?
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep you alive. It accounts for energy used by your heart, lungs, brain, liver, kidneys, and all other organs. BMR typically represents 60–75% of total daily calorie expenditure.
BMR is calculated using either the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (recommended for most people) or the Harris-Benedict equation (an older formula). Both use age, sex, height, and weight as inputs. Mifflin-St Jeor is considered more accurate for modern populations.
Your BMR is the floor of your calorie needs — you should never eat fewer calories than your BMR for extended periods, as this can cause muscle loss, nutrient deficiencies, and metabolic adaptation. BMR is the starting point for calculating your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure).
How to Use the BMR Calculator
Find your resting calorie burn in seconds.
- 1
Enter your age
BMR decreases with age as muscle mass naturally declines.
- 2
Select your sex
Men and women have different BMR formulas due to differences in average muscle mass and body composition.
- 3
Enter your height and weight
Use your current measurements for the most accurate result.
- 4
View your BMR
Your resting calorie burn is displayed in calories per day. This is the minimum you should eat to support basic bodily functions.
