What is a Body Fat Calculator?

Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that is composed of fat tissue. Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, body fat percentage distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water), making it a more accurate measure of body composition.

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy method, which estimates body fat from circumference measurements of the neck, waist, and hips (for women). It is one of the most practical field methods because it requires only a tape measure and has been validated against more expensive techniques like DEXA scans.

Healthy body fat ranges differ by sex and age. For men, 10–20% is considered fit; for women, 18–28%. Athletes often fall below these ranges. Very low body fat (below 5% for men, below 12% for women) can be dangerous and is not recommended for most people.

How to Use the Body Fat Calculator

Estimate your body fat percentage using just a tape measure.

  1. 1

    Measure your neck circumference

Measure around the narrowest part of your neck, just below the larynx (Adam's apple), keeping the tape horizontal.

  2. 2

    Measure your waist circumference

For men: measure at the navel. For women: measure at the narrowest point of the waist.

  3. 3

Measure your hip circumference (women only)

Measure around the widest part of your hips and buttocks, keeping the tape horizontal.

  4. 4

    Enter your height

Input your height in inches or centimeters.

  5. 5

    View your body fat percentage

The calculator shows your estimated body fat percentage and your fitness category.
